Freaky Weather...

Well, after it was 63 degrees yesterday, all the snow is definitely gone from Thanksgiving.
Today, it'll also be in the 60's here before finally turning colder. With this weird, warm weather, I'm sure lots of people are going to get sick. It always happens that way.

Did you hear how the cable industry is being pressured into offereing channels, "A-La Carte"? In other words, I can GET, all the Discovery channels that I want, and NOT get the Home Shopping Channel if I don't want it. Where do I sign up????

I might have found a car or two that my son will like.... now, it's just getting there to check them out. Between his work and school.. it's tough to find time that we're both free. I may have to take some time from work. Oh well.

Other than that, I'm going to be up to my armpits in alligators today in work. Working in Farmington (the main office) is nice, but it backs me up in work at my regular places.

So... on to the news:

You Canadiens are so funny...
Okay, we'll give you the crack pipe and some vasoline for your chapped lips, but please pay your bills before getting high. Thank you, the Ontario Government.

At least it's not Monday...

Well, my back is still sore, and I'm living on Advils to keep it down to a minimum, but sometimes I just move the wrong way and it's excruciating. Oh well... I guess I'm getting old. I just need to lay down with a heating pad on it.. *frown*

Tonight is one of the nights with a UCONN basketball game, so Ray will probably come over to watch it. Because it's on early, I'll hopefully be in bed by 9pm to rest up this back.

Other than that, not too much new... still no car for my son.

BTW, has anyone been reading Mark's blog? It's really good and he writes incredibly well. Check it out.

On to the news:

Is it Monday already???

Well, it was a nice weekend.. and this week's going to be a long week.

I woke up this morning with a very painful back.. not sure what caused it, but I've already taken 4 advil's and we'll see if that helps.

Thanksgiving was nice...
Woke up at 5am to put the 22 pound turkey in the oven to find two inches of snow outside, and it still snowing hard. After getting it stuffed, and in the oven, I decided to go to the bakery to get the rolls, as I knew my mom wouldn't be going out (she was going to pick them up). So... off in my SUV and get the rolls, and back in bed when I got home.
Now there is nothing... NOTHING like the smell of turky cooking in the oven... Mmmmmmm! By the time we got up again, we had about 4 inches of the white stuff out. The wife and I jumped in my SUV, and went down to pick up her mom. My brother picked up my mom. The turkey came out fantastic, everyone was happy... all in all, it was great day, but for missing my dad there.

Friday, I went out with my daughter to pick up a few things, as she's making scarves for all her friends for Christmas and needed more yarn, and a few other things. We intentionally stayed away from the malls. Not much else, other than a relaxing day for both Friday and Saturday.

Yesterday, we went to see Harry Potter with our friends Ray and Debbie. While the movie was great, it left out a LOT of things at the end! I was kinda disappointed by that.

I wonder if anyone saw in the news this weekend, that Pat Morita died... (Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid movies). I always liked him.

Which brings us to today...

On to the news:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Yes, the first of the Holidays is here tomorrow. Are you ready?
Our Turkey is in the fridge (it's way too big, but who cares), all foods bought, table will be set tonight, wine chilled.. all we need are the people.

Is there ANY better smell in the world, than a turkey cooking in the oven? I can't wait till tomorrow, mid-morning!

Well, my UCONN Husky Basketball team is doing great! They won their first game last week, and in the last 2 days won their first two games in the Maui Invitational Tournament. Tonight, they play Gonzaga for the tournament title.

Normally, on days before holidays, I have a nice easy day planned... not so today. I'm up to my armpits in alligators, and sinking fast *frown*.

And Mark, the link is updated.. thanks for the heads-up!

With that, I don't know if there'll be a blog on Friday.. check back to see.

Have a great Thanksgiving, and please remember to give thanks for the ones you love who are around you.

Hump-Day already...!

Yep, with only a 3 day workweek, today is Hump-Day!

Well, the deal on the car for my son is off, thanks to my wife. The search continues.

After reading Mark's blog, he's been talking lately about his first car.
My first car, was a 1964 Ford Fairlane, that was MINT. It was a light green color, and I loved it.
The bad news is, in the first 6 months of owning it, I got in 6 accidents, NONE Of which were my fault! 2 of them I wasn't even in the car! This car must have had a "HIT ME" sign on it. Once, a lady accused me of hitting her (she came out of a parking lot and hit my car in the door), and luckily, a dozen or so witnesses told the police the true story. When she refused to pay for my repairs, I had her thrown in jail (at the recommendation of my insurance company). She was only there a few days before agreeing to pay me, then after paying me a few dollars, skipped town.
I finally got rid of the car, as I figured my luck may run out.. and bought my first "hot car". More on that another day.

On to the news:

It can only get better.....

Well, luckily it's a short week, work-wise... so it should be nice.
It used to be, that I absolutely loved the holidays.. but lately, I've been feeling more dread than anything, for various reasons I won't go into. I'm not talking about Thanksgiving.. because that's always nice, but Christmas, for quite some time has been disappointing to me. I must be getting old.

The weekend was good... up till last night. We found a car for my son, everyone likes it, he was going to go test drive it today, but like every other time, my wife put a stop to it at the 11th hour. It never fails.. everyone gets excited over a new car, she likes it, says ok.. then backs out at the last minute. I'm really getting tired of this. Too much history to this to go into now.. but suffice it to say, everyone lost sleep last night.

On to the news.. as I don't feel like talking anymore:

Best holiday light display ever. Griswold surrenders (this guy has WAY too much time on his hands!)

Ahh... Friday once again...!

Well, it's been a long week.. and it's finally near the end. Thanksgiving is coming, and while I was curious whether I'd look forward to the holidays or not because of my dad's passing... I think I am looking forward to them, if only because the whole family seems to get closer at that time. Yes, I'll miss my dad terribly.. but so will everyone else.

I've been looking at a new watch for quite some time now (I hadn't had a a "good" watch), and finally found what I wanted, at a price I would pay, and it came in yesterday!

I worked almost all day yesterday in our Farmington office.. and quite honestly, it was fun. I'm going to be working there every Tuesday and Thursday from now on, or so I'm told. It's also closer to home.. which is a good thing! *chuckle*

The car we're looking for, for my son is supposed to be in today.. so we'll go see it after work. I hope everyone agrees so we can stop playing "Car Swap".

And now, on with the news:

Only thing worse than an icy road is an icy road with several thousand gallons of cooking oil spilled on it. Indiana drivers cue the Benny Hill music

And now, for my Friday, BOTD! (it IS all in the eyes)

There's always room for one more!

Have a great weekend....

Not a lot of time today...

It's going to be a busy morning.. so....

Is everyone ready for Thanksgiving? We're having the whole family over. Brother and sister in law, and 2 mom's. I do enjoy Thanksgiving.. it's nice to have the family around. In the past.. it didn't mean that much to me.. but as I get older......

So what's everyone doing for Turkey Day?

The UCONN Women are on TV tonight, and Ray's coming over. It's the semi-finals of the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).

The car we want to look for, for my son still isn't in yet at the dealers.. I'm hoping it comes in today.

Oh, I put up a new link at left, to Mark's blog. He's a very prolific writer, so check out his blog when you get a minute.

On to the news:

Did I say November was here?

Well, a warm front is coming through today.. and it's going to be in the 60's to near 70! Go figure. This has been the oddest year for weather.

You know Trucker Bob, I don't think I'd trade my Vette for that Camaro... it's not a "real" one. Reading the story, they don't share ANY body panel with a real Camaro. I'm a real "original" fan.. even with my Vette.
ps, I meant I'd like one of those cars AND my Vette! *LOL*

Mark, you actually ADMIT you drove a 1976 Dodge Aspen? Wow...! *LOL*

Hey Curt, you still out there bud? How about you Bubba????

Unfortunately, my dear friend and longtime blog reader michelle's husband Fred passed away on Sunday. My most heartfelt condolences to her and her family for their incredible loss. Please add them to your thoughts and prayers.

And with that... on with the news:

Bad: Your printer quits. Worse: You have to send it out for repair. Worst: It's jammed with the counterfeit bills you've been making

And just for you Aaron:

November is finally here....

Well, yesterday it was up in the mid 60's again, but I have a feeling that'll be the last day of warm weather like that. The forecast looks for typical November weather from this point forward.

Mark, you are welcome to link to my blog if you wish. I did that for a different reasonn (I'll give people the link to my wine blog that I might not want coming here).
I'll post a link to yours here soon if that's alright.

My friend Ray came over to watch the second game of the UCONN Husky Women's basketball team... they're playing in a early season tournament and kicked butt last night!
Anyone that knows me knows I LOVE the UCONN Husky Mens and Women's teams and watch every game that I can. Ray comes over to watch most of them with me too.

I'm getting pretty frustrated trying to find a car for my son. His choices are so darned narrow, that it's hard to find exactly what he wants (with our money). I'm about ready to buy him a junk car to get him through till he's done with college. We'll see.

Well, on to the news:

Well, I finally found what I want for Christmas!
James Bond's original 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Complete with twin 30 caliber guns, tire slashers, smoke screen and oil slick machines.

Ok... if that's too expensive, I'll have to settle for this Camaro...

Wow....:

and for today's headline of the day:

That's it for today... enjoy your day.

The Holidays are Coming....

It seems like the summer flew by.. and the holidays are coming. It's going to be quite a bit different this year.. with dad not here. Everyone's coming to my house for Thanksgiving.. but there'll be an empty seat, in the house and our hearts.

The weekend was good.. did a lot of running around doing things, looking for a car for my son (still haven't found one). Well, we did find one, but the wife thinnks it's too much for what we get. So, the search continues.

Just a reminder, I put a new post in my "The Wine Spot" blog. Check it out at left.

Friday, my daughter and I took mom out for a ride in daughter's new car, then took her to lunch and to Costco's. She really seems to be doing well.

Mark, to answer your question, we had a VERY late turning of the leaves this year, and they all seemed to fall at once. Sorry, I hadn't gotten any pictures though I should have.

I have to get moving, so on to the news:

Here's one for you Bob:

And for all us guys:

TGIF...!

I'm glad we're off work today... it's nice to be able to sleep in a bit.
Not sure what I'm going to do today, but daughter's off too, so we'll probably do something together. For sure, we'll stop down and see my mom.

The leaves have finally mostly fallen from the trees in the last week. It's been a strange year with all the rain we had in October, none of them fell, and they turned colors real late. If it's dry this weekend, that means we'll be bagging leaves.

I'm very glad to hear michelle's husband, Fred, will hopefully be coming home from the hospital soon. He's been in there a while, and she's been at his side constantly.

I also hope Karen's up and around more soon.... her blog's always late cause she's sleeping in (chuckling).

Just so everyone knows, there's a new posting on my wine blog, The Wine Spot!

Well, on to the news:

Long weekend... yay!

Although not a veteran, I have Veteran's Day off. It'll be good so I can try to sleep in late and catch up on some much needed rest.

We're getting into my favorite time of the year.... no, not the holidays, but NCAA Basketball Season! I'm a BIG College Basketball fan, especially our UCONN Huskies! Two time National Champions. Our coach, Jim Calhoun is in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Next Friday, the season starts for real.
Part of the reason I enjoy it so much, is my friend Ray comes over and watches almost all the games with me. We're both big fans.

Other than that, Saturday morning, I'm going to have breakfast with a bunch of guys I used to work with at my last job where I was for 11 years. Should be fun, and I'll get to see some wonderful people I haven't seen in years.

Well, on to the news:

In one of the funniest headlines and stories I've EVER seen:
Enrique Iglesias has no penis (link goes to a blog)

And this one... "ehem" is for Karen.... *chuckle*

33 years, 40 attempts, 7 instructors and $47,000 later, English woman gets her driver's licence. Next stop: Ye Olde street market

That's it for today.... don't forget, tomorrow's blog may be late...!

Memories....

Thinking back about my dad.. we were always a "camping" family. From my earliest rememberences, we camped all summer long for a few years at a state park on the ocean. Dad would spend his 2 week vacations there, then after that was done, would commute 40+ miles on weekends to spend with us.
Later, my parents bought a truck-camper, and we travelled everywhere with that from Canada to Texas to see the newly built Houston Astrodome. I remember camping in Myrgle Beach, South Carolina and watching man walk on the moon on a tiny black and white TV. Dad always drove, as mom didn't drive the big truck. I never realized the hard work he did getting us safely from place to place till lately when I think back over it.
More on this another time...

I slept ok last night... still not 8 hours, but it's getting better.

I have Friday off this week for Veterans day.. so the blog Friday will be late.

On to the news:

Another day... Thank Goodness it's a short week...

I was so exhausted last night, I fell asleep before my head hit the pillow. Too bad I woke up around midnight, wide eye'd.

The outpouring of condolences I've received everywhere, is overwhelming.
I got the most beautiful box of gifts yesterday from people at work. It was from Harry David (a large maker of such baskets) with 6 pears, 2 apples, cheese, crackers, jams, nuts, smoked salmon, chocolates.. and much more. Over 40 people from work signed and contributed.
I've gotten cards from people I haven't seen in ages, phone calls from Florida, as well as in town.

BTW Karen, my Vette is put to bed for the winter. I already miss just seeing it in my garage, but, spring will arrive soon enough.

If they still read here, what happened to Kacie and PorterSR?????

Back to work...

First of all, thank you ALL, for the kind words and prayers for me and my family. Your kindness and thoughtfulness will never be forgotten.

My dad's wake was well attended, including a few people from work that I didn't expect, that really meant a lot.
Dad had a full military funeral, complete with 2 Naval Petty Officers directing everything, plus the 21 gun salute, the playing of Taps (where I completely lost control), and the playing of Amazing Grace on bagpipes. I could never fully explain how beautiful it was.. maybe Aaron could help as he was there.
Dad was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) club (you do not have to be disabled to join, only a veteran), and they also came out in full force.

In the midst of all that, I broke a tooth last week and had to spend quite a few hours in the dentist chair.. *groan*.

more later.....

Sleep's been eluding me these last few days.. and last night was the worst. I lied awake and stared at the ceiling most of the night.
Sleep will come..... it'll take time.

This weekend, my daughter also decided to buy a new car, so we traded in my wife's car towards it as she likes my daughter's old car better (not really old, it's a 2003 car). So, daughter is sporting around with a brand new Mazda 3 GT model, with just about every single option. Must be nice....

On to the news:

Hillbilly caviar soon to be sweeping the Nation. Yee Haw. Pass the corn chips

Got to run... not a lot of time this morning as you can imagine...

Have a great day all..

First of all, thank you ALL, so very much for your kind thoughts and words. Yes Curt, I got your wonderful voicemail. Thank you bud.

Today is my dad's wake, and so far everyone's taken things quite well.

I was lucky.. mom called me Monday night and asked me to come down as dad was agitated for some reason. My daughter and I went down, and I sat with dad for a while, and we talked for a bit while my mom tried to get some much needed sleep in her easy chair. I even made him laugh.
I put dad to bed, and sat watching TV with my daughter while mom slept for a bit, then she got up and wanted to go to bed, so daughter and I went home.

I got a chance to see my dad the night before he passed, and that was VERY special to me.

I'll be back in work on Monday, and hopefully will have a full blog then.

Thank you all once again.

Dave
